December. The dark month. Were it not for the
holidays that we celebrate in December, this would indeed be a very dark
month. The winter solstice brings the shortest day, the longest
night. Darkness. So we sun-loving creatures struggle through
days growing shorter as we approach the winter solstice on December
21st. But into this dark month pours the beautiful light of
Chanukah and Christmas.
Chanukah, the festival of light, from the miraculous hand of
God, delivers eight glorious days of light, commemorating the historic
victory of the Jews regaining and rededicating the Temple and the miracle
of a day’s worth of oil lasting 8 days to light the Temple. Menorahs
around the world gradually fill the dark night with light for 8 days.
Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ. The
brilliant star pours its light down to lead the way to the Child in
Bethlehem. For Christians this marks the entrance of the Son of God
onto our planet. The Light of the World comes to bring love, peace
and salvation.
For all people, this is a time for growing, a time of
opportunity to look both within ourselves and beyond, to acquire fresh
insights, to begin to understand that there is far more to our existence
than the surface suggests. Deep within each of us glows a spiritual
flame, guiding us to see beyond the simple physical, letting the potential
of our spirit shine forth. We must use the power of the light within to
repulse the darkness of prejudice, anger, jealousy, fear and
despair. We must recognize that human spark encouraging us to reach
beyond our perceived limitations. We are all drawn to the flame, to
the Light, during these dark days searching for our very souls, yearning
to touch the infinite, the brilliant, the miraculous.
And don’t forget that the date that marks the shortest day
also marks the beginning of the return of the sun as subsequent days grow
longer; as we head toward the promise of Spring. And God bless.

“I awoke one morning with a sty in
my left eye that was so large that it obstructed my vision as if there was
a pearl perched on my lower eyelid. To make matters worse, the sty
caused my entire eye socket area to swell up, even extending below the eye
